Today in 1945, the first nuclear explosion, code named Trinity, took place at then USAAF Alamogordo Bombing and Gunnery Range in the Jornada del Muerto desert in New Mexico. “The Gadget” was an implosion-design plutonium device, nearly identical to the “Fat Man” used less than a month later to bomb the Japanese city of Nagasaki.
