Today in 1937, semi-garbled radio transmissions between 6:14 and 8:43 a.m. were the last known communications with Amelia Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan. Their Electra plane departed from Lae Airfield in Papua New Guinea at midnight, and was meant to land on Howland Island in the central Pacific Ocean. Earhart and Noonan were never seen or head from again, leading to one of the most famous disappearances in the world.
