Today in 1962, Frank Morris and brothers John and Clarence Anglin escaped from Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary. They (along with two men in 1937 who escaped during a bad storm and were presumed dead) are the only ones in Alcatraz’ 29 year history to do so. Little more than circumstantial evidence exists as to what may have happened to them after their escape. Some claim they were met at nearby Angel Island in a stolen car and driven to Mexico. The FBI’s investigation ended 17 years later with the conclusion that all three men most likely drowned trying to swim to Angel Island. In 2013, the San Francisco Police Department received a letter from a man claiming to be John Anglin. The letter stated that Frank Morris and Clarence Anglin lived until 2008 and 2011, respectively, and that John himself had been diagnosed with cancer. The validity of the letter was ruled inconclusive.
