June 3, 1889: America Gets On The Grid

Today in 1889, the United States’ first long-distance electric power transmission line was completed. It ran 14 miles from a hydroelectric generating plant in Willamette Falls to Chapman Square in downtown Portland, OR. The plant lasted only 6 years before advancing technologies forced construction of an updated version.
