Today in 1987, Les Miserables won 8 of its 10 Tony award nominations: Best Musical, Best Direction, Best Book of a Musical, Featured Actress, Featured Actor, Best Original Score, Scenic Design, and Lighting Design. Based on the 1862 novel of the same name by French novelist Victor Hugo, Les Mis follows various characters’ lives leading up to the Paris Uprising of 1832. The 2012 British/American film starring Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway received similar praise and awards.
