Today in 1989, activist Michael Moore’s documentary Roger & Me took home the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film covers the economic fallout in Flint, MI after General Motors closed several factories, leaving thousands unemployed. Roger & Me was Moore’s first feature-length documentary. He would later gain notoriety for his films Bowling For Columbine (2002) and Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004). Almost 30 years later, Roger & Me remains Moore’s highest-rated film.
