August 11, 1942: Hollywood Actress and Composer Lay the Groundwork for Wi-Fi

Today in 1942, actress Hedy Lamarr and composer George Antheil received a patent (No. 2,292,387) for their "secret communications system." Using a frequency-hopping spread spectrum method, their design would allow data to "hop" to different frequencies while traveling from transmitter to receiver, increasing the security of the information being sent. This laid the groundwork for most modern technologies, including Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
