August 26, 1895: Niagara Falls Produces Alternating Current

Today in 1895, the hydroelectric generators at Niagara Falls were turned on for the first time. Previously the falls were able to produce some direct current for the surrounding area. Westinghouse Electric began constructing a system to generate alternating current in 1893. They produced the Adams Power Plant Transformer House, which is now a historical landmark.
