October 10, 1990: Space Shuttle Discovery Completes 11th Mission

Today in 1990, NASA's Space Shuttle Discovery completed its eleventh mission. While it was only a four day expedition, many different scientific experiments were conducted during its flight. Among them were the behavior of fire and plant cells in space, and the effects of microgravity on the heart and bones. Discovery was also equipped with multiple instruments for studying the sun.

August 30, 1984: Space Shuttle Discovery’s Maiden Voyage

Today in 1984, NASA's Space Shuttle Discovery launched on its maiden voyage. Discovery was in operation for over 27 years before its final touchdown on March 9, 2011. During its run, it was launched and landed 39 times, the most by any spacecraft to date. Among its notable voyages is the launching of the Hubble Space Telescope in 1990 and the second flight of astronaut John Glenn in 1998, who became the oldest man in space at 77 years old. May 29, 1999: First Shuttle Dock on International Space Station

Today in 1999, the Space Shuttle Discovery became the first shuttle to dock with the International Space Station. Mission STS-96 was a resupply mission launched from Kennedy Space Center on May 27. The mission lasted just under 10 days.
