November 9, 1967: The First Issue of Rolling Stone Is Published

Today in 1967, magazine editors Jann Wenner and Ralph Gleason founded Rolling Stone magazine in San Francisco, CA. The name of the magazine was said to have been inspired by multiple sources: Muddy Waters' "Rollin' Stone," Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone," and the British rock band The Rolling Stones. While initially a "hippie" magazine, Rolling Stone shifted more toward music coverage in the 70's, along with the addition of more politically-charged pieces thanks to author Hunter S. Thompson. In fact, Thompson first published his defining work, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, within the pages of Rolling Stone.
