July 4, 1997: Pathfinder Lands On Mars

Today in 1997, the MESUR Pathfinder landed on the surface of Mars. Upon landing, it was renamed the Carl Sagan Memorial Station, in honor of the late astrophysicist. One day after touching down, it deployed the Mars Rover Sojourner. The mission was expected to last between a week and a month, but lasted almost three months, gathering far more data than was originally planned. May 6, 2002: Elon Musk Launches SpaceX

Today in 2002, Elon Musk founded the Space Exploration Technologies Corp., or SpaceX. The goal of the company is to find an efficient way to colonize Mars. Over the years, SpaceX has set multiple records for being the first private company to reach orbit. They also have several developmental contracts with NASA.
